چکیده

Over the past three years a UK EPSRC research programme has been underway at Heriot-Watt University investigating siphonic roof rainwater systems. This text aims to report the principle 8ndings of the project to date. A brief description of experimental and numerical aims is given. The priming procedure which occurs in an idealised system is documented. The test procedures employed are described, and experimental results are illustrated. The framework employed to numerically model the ambient hydraulics is described in some detailed. Conclusions are drawn regarding the operational characteristics of siphonic roof rainwater systems as a whole. c © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Investigation into the performance characteristics of mult–

Previous research at Heriot-Watt University has led to a better understanding of the performance characteristics of siphonic rainwater systems, with particular reference to the priming of such systems. This has resulted in the development of a numerical model capable of accurately simulating the priming phase of single outlet siphonic rainwater systems. However, the majority of installed system...

Issues Facing Design Professionals through the Lens of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses

The drainage of low-sloped roof systems involves multiple design professionals, and often each has a different opinion as to their design responsibility. Roofing issues have been identified as being a number one source of litigation, and rain-induced roof collapses continue to occur with alarming frequency. With the backdrop of several rain-induced roof collapses, this paper illustrates the com...

Direct Simulation of Evolution and Control of Nonlinear Instabilities in Attachment{line Boundary Layers

The unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of spatially evolving disturbances in a threedimensional (3-D) attachment-line boundary layer. Two-dimensional (2-D) disturbances are introduced either by forcing at the in ow or by harmonic-source generators at the wall; 3-D disturbances are introduced by harmonic-source generators at the wa...

Computation of Unsteady Nonlinear Flows in Cascades Using a Harmonic Balance Technique

A harmonic balance technique for modeling unsteady nonlinear ows in turbomachinery is presented. The analysis exploits the fact that many unsteady ows of interest in turbomachinery are periodic in time. Thus, the unsteady ow conservation variables may be represented by a Fourier series in time with spatially varying coefŽ cients. This assumption leads to a harmonic balance form of the Eul...

Optimal and Robust Control and Estimationof Linear Paths to TransitionBy

Optimal and robust control theories are used to determine eeective, estimator-based feedback control rules for laminar plane channel ows that eeectively stabilize linearly unstable ow perturbations at Re = 10; 000 and linearly stable ow perturbations, characterized by mechanisms for very large disturbance ampliication, at Re = 5; 000. Wall transpiration (unsteady blowing/suction) with zero net ...
